Happiness, something that we always think of, always strive for, but do you really know how to reach it? And if yes, what does it feel like? How do you actually know whether you are happy or not? These questions come to my mind when I think about happiness. It is one of the things that I always want, but actually don’t know what it means.
When I looked it up, the dictionary states that happiness is a state of mind or feeling characterized by contentment, love, satisfaction, pleasure, or joy. When you really think about it, we all feel these kind of feelings at some points in our daily life, for days ,hours or even just minutes. But does that mean that we are happy individuals?!
What I have noticed in my life, and the life of the people around me, we often condition our happiness to a particular event and believe that when this so called event happens we will be extremely happy for a very long time. Is this really true?
How many of you think that if he/she get an awesome job then will be happy, if she/he get married to a perfect match then will be happy, if her/she become financially stable then will be happy, if he/she become a parent then will be happy and the list goes on and on depends on the values of each one of us. But notice the “if” here, this makes it conditional. What if what we think would make us happy ever after will not occur for some reason, or actually be followed by tragic life event which we all face at some points in our lives. Does that mean that we will be staying miserable for the rest of our lives?
Personally, I used to think this way, keep telling myself that if I did this or got that I would be very happy, and when it happens, for some reason this so called feeling of happiness just vanish within a matter of hours. So is this happiness? I don’t think so! But it got my little mind thinking, trying to figure out what happiness is all about and how we can reach it. I want to be happy, this is what the average human being wants whether he/she realizes it or not. Does a book titled “How to be happy, techniques for a happy life!” helps? NO! Does smiling and laughing all day helps? Also NO! regardless of how much your idea of becoming happy is twisted, it wouldn’t work unless it is actually sustainable. What does that mean? It means that the source of your happiness should exist in your life at anytime and anywhere. Whatever life put you through, no matter how you change as a person, this source should exist at all times. It should bring you happiness and inner peace no matter how ugly your life is getting.
Ok I am sure you are wondering what I’m referring to, a magical power to make and keep us happy at all times. I realized it when I read this verse from the holy Quran, Surat AlNahl:
Translation: ( Whoever does right, whether male or female, and is a believer, We will make him live a good life, and We will award them their reward for the best of what they used to do.) (Quran, 16:97)
Reflecting on that Ayah, you might say, OK alhamdulellah (Thank you Allah) I am performing my religious duties in the best way I can, but still I don’t get this feeling. And yeah, I thought that too, and I kind of figured out why. I truly believe that when you genuinely believe in something, all the power in the world would somehow make sense of it to you. Does that make sense? I hope so! So when you believe that when you do something right that satisfy Allah you will be happier and your inner peace would increase, then it will inshaAllah (If Allah wills). Because really, aren’t we doing all these things in our everyday life! As a Muslims, I pray, fast, read Qura’an, help the needy and strive for many other good deeds as much as I can. So if in every act and every thought we honestly believe that by doing it, Allah would make us happier, then we will be. I hope this make sense to you like it does to me!
So I encourage you all to start adapting this mindset and you will notice how your life is going to change!
